Despite slowed growth in the wireless communications terminal market due to the termination of government subsidies, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of Korean subscribers as of the end of 1999, with 50% of the total population currently registered as mobile phone
subscribers (Korea ranks 6th in the world in terms of the number of subscribers for every 100 people).
As of the end of July 2000, the number of Korean subscribers stands at approximately 26 million. This number is expected in increase even further after the IMT-2000 service is commenced.
KET has designated the wireless communications component business as a core business area, and as a result, succeeded in introducing the TCXO.
The TCXO, short for Temperature Controlled Crystal Oscillator, is a core component of the wireless communications terminal, which uses a temperature-controlled circuit, to enable stable frequency output within a wide range of temperatures.
In order to manufacture this component, a sub-micron-level ultra-precise crystal abrasion technology is required.
A Japanese company currently has 90% of the worldwide market share for this product.
As for Korean companies, it is difficult to secure price competitiveness due to a low rate of orders. KET has established an automated production line in cooperation with Japan¡¯s HERTZ in order to support mass production. At present, we have a production capacity of 500,000 units per month. We currently produce ultra-small units (7¡¿5, 5¡¿3.2) with a variety of bandwidth. |
